Bible-translation project gets $50 million donation

A new effort to translate the Bible into every living language kicked off Saturday with the help of a $50 million anonymous gift to the Orlando-based Wycliffe USA, the world's largest Bible-translation company.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A new effort to translate the Bible into every living language kicked off Saturday with the help of a $50 million anonymous gift to the Orlando-based Wycliffe USA, the world's largest Bible-translation company.

The goal of Wycliffe's Last Languages Campaign is to translate the Bible for all of the 2,400 languages that do not have one. Those represent about one-third of all languages spoken and include nearly 200 million people, mostly in three regions: Central Africa, northern India-southern China, and Indonesia-Papua New Guinea.

Worldwide, the nonprofit Bible-translation company has more than 6,400 people working in 93 countries. In 1999, about 1,500 languages had translations of the Bible. That number since has more than doubled to 4,000.

The translations are expected to take at least 17 years to complete.

Grant helps SPORTS provide interpreters for deaf players

Dante Paulone, 11, has a special relationship with his 14-year-old cousin, Tyler Lehnerz. Dante, an avid athlete, was born deaf and needs an interpreter when he plays sports. So Tyler stepped in to help.

Dante plays on the Knights traveling football team through the Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports, and Tyler goes to his practices and games to interpret what coaches and players are saying. Saturday night, the pair will go to the Indiana Elementary Football Association's state finals where the Knights play Center Grove.

Dante said through an interpretive service that he's excited for the game and loves sports and competition. He hopes to play sports through college.

Teri Paulone, his mother, said it would be difficult for Dante to play his best without an interpreter, because he wouldn't always know what the coach and team expect of him. Teri Paulone, who's also deaf and spoke through the service, said the SPORTS program has provided interpreters to her son for years.

The federal courts' Telephone Interpreting Program (TIP), although available nationwide only since 2002, has saved an estimated $1.4 million—$700,000 in 2003 so far.

"It has been a major cost-savings to this court," reports Betty Griess, clerk of court for the District of Wyoming. "Our cases are moved in a more efficient and faster manner than when we were looking for interpreters to come to Cheyenne for all court hearings."

Chief Judge George Singal of the District of Maine also cited "considerable cost-savings," and added: "Telephone interpreting is especially useful when you have a need for the more esoteric languages. You're not going to find, for example, someone in Bangor who is qualified to interpret Croatian."

TIP allows an interpreter at a remote location to deliver simultaneous interpretation of court proceedings for defendants and consecutive interpreting for the court record by means of a two-line telephone system.

Savings result because interpreters can be used for multiple assignments on the same day, and because of reduced time-and-travel costs.

"When we remodeled the 1960s-vintage courtroom in Bangor last year, we had it rewired to accommodate telephone interpreting," Singal said. "There are portable earphones for the defendant, and everyone present can hear the interpreter putting the defendant's words into English. The defendant wears a tiny microphone to speak to the interpreter. Before, an interpreter was physically present and exchanging whispers with the defendant."

In the District of Nebraska, telephone interpreters are used for a wide range of hearings except trials, said Clerk of Court Gary McFarland.....

Jan. 19--ST. PETERSBURG -- Fernando Martinez high-fives doctors and nurses as they enter an exam room at All Children's Hospital for his monthly checkup.

"I love you," said transplant coordinator Mati Vizcaino as she hugs the 2-year-old, who underwent a bone marrow transplant in August for a rare blood disorder. "Yo te amo."

While Fernando plays, his mother, Leticia, and the boy's transplant surgeon, Michael Nieder, review the boy's eating habits, sleeping patterns and reactions to medications with an interpreter not in the room, but hooked up via a special dual handset phone.

As Nieder probes for answers in English, Leticia, a Mexican immigrant who moved to Safety Harbor four years ago, responds in her native Spanish. These conversations carry life and death consequences for the boy and wouldn't be possible without language interpreters.

"If [the doctor or nurse] can't speak the language, you are lost. You don't get the information," said Nieder, who has worked at the St. Petersburg hospital with patients who speak a wide range of languages, including Arabic, Greek, Haitian Creole and Russian.
